Hanging Out On The Mountain
If you are searching for the perfect place to spend an hour or more just hanging out, consider Morrow Mountain State Park. All of the roads leading to the park are guaranteed to set the mood for a great ride and at the end of the day you will probably want to tell all of your old friends about some new friends you met at the top of the mountain.
Part of the reason is that this entire area is perfect for riding. Touring types, trikes, crotch rockets, choppers, big scooters, and everything in between can be found here. The road up the mountain isn't terribly difficult, although you MUST pay attention, especially on the way down. It's easy to pick up lots of speed before recognizing that's a sharp hairpin turn ahead!
Once you get to the top you find a very large parking area offering a welcome breeze and super view of the surrounding countryside. The surprise is that you really can see for miles, even though the hilltop itself isn't discernible from the roadways approaching the park. The long ridges and valleys are evident, and several bodies of water serve as landmarks when you orient to a map. Of course, you probably won't even care about where you are at or how you got there, it's just a natural place to forget about the little details as you walk over to another biker and introduce yourself.
Summer isn't the only good gathering time on Morrow Mountain. I'm part of an enthusiastic group of Honda ST riders that meets at Noon every New Years Day, regardless of the weather. I'm close, so the cold and rain are a minor inconvenience for me, but one of our group comes from over 200 miles away. He starts before dawn and as soon as lunch is done he heads for Murrell's Inlet, SC - and it's after dark when he gets home. That part of the allure of this place, memories and friends are made and kept here.
Whatever route you take to find Morrow Mountain, the roadways are in excellent condition. The roads immediately adjacent to the park are super. Twisty, hilly, and rarely congested with traffic.
Plan to picnic at the top of the mountain, or at other designated areas of the park. Those wanting to find a restaurant in the area will find several options for taste and budget in Albemarle and nearby Badin.
It can take two days to explore all of the surrounding roads. There are several local museums, including one inside the park. Each has its' own story to tell, and all have a unique flavor. And there is a very enticing golf couse at Badin that will certainly test your ability to make short chip shot from fifteen feet BELOW the green. You really CAN spend two leisurely days here, so why not plan for it now?
Enjoy your visit, maybe we'll meet at the top of the mountain...if not, be sure to wave as we pass on the highway!

Ride a couple of minutes and you are within lots of places to shop and eat. Traffic on the NC-740 connector in this area can be very busy - be careful as nearly all cagers are interested in what's going on at the Walmart store and NOT paying attention to YOU.

The last time I rode by a hazmat team was attending to a meth cooking operation in one of the rooms. Avoid it.
