Beginning at I-70, US-73 runs north from Bonner Springs to a few miles west of Leavenworth as a four lane divided highway, and it's really just a commuter route. Once the route returns to two lane it's considered a scenic route as it runs along glacial hills for the next 20 miles to Atchison. Luckily riders have a viable alternative to continue the great views when US-73 begins to turn west from Atchison, and that's K-7 north to Rulo, Nebraska and then US-159 west to Falls City. It doesn't add any significant distance to the trip, and the roadway and traffic are about equal.

A short 19 or 20 miles to finish the route into Dawson offers a couple of good opportunities for camping and a hint of why Nebraska is considered flatland.
