Dedicated to the boys of the Jewell family Jewell GAR Post 62
Cedar Springs Cemetery, Cedar Springs
"To Our Union Dead"
This is a nice memorial of the era, but visitors aren't really awed by the effort unless they find the gravesite of the Jewell family, near the entrance to the cemetery. There, the tragedy of this family is evident as it relates the fate of the sons of Edward and J.K. Jewell.
On May 27, 1864, young Leander Jewell, a 22 year old soldier of Company A, 6th Michigan Calvalry, died in action. The very next day his younger brother; 18 year old Leroy, attached to the First Michigan Mechanics & Engineers, also died. A third son is also represented here; Eugene died June 24, 1869 at age 20 years, but nothing indicates if he also served in the Michigan contingent of Union forces.
Also listed in the roster of Company A, 6th Michigan Cavalry is Rueben Jewell, age 38, from Solon, Michigan. It's likely that Rueben was a cousin, or maybe an uncle.
