Ovid is one of those towns that once held the promise of every thriving community in rural Michigan. Its' zenith was the years between the Civil War and World War I. As nearby communities grew with industrial resources the little town began to decline and is now known for dairy farms and inexpensive living for those seeking respite from Lansing and Flint.
Although there probably was a GAR chapter here, the memorial does not specifically state that this was erected by GAR or WRC. Most likely it was a combination of village funds and GAR/WRC members that raised the money necessary to create the memorial area.
