CSA Memorial - Inscription is fading
Buncombe County Veterans Memorials
Buncombe County Courthouse, US-70
Ashville, Buncombe County

"By the Asheville Chapter of
The Daughters of The Confederacy
and friends
This monument is erected commemorating the heoric part taken by the 50th Regt. N.C. Volunteers in the great Battle of Chickamauga, Sept 20, 1863
Here is was given post of honor by State Commission appointed in 1893 to locate the position of each N.C. Regt in that battle and a marker placed on eastern margin of Lafayette Pike and Kelly's Field bearing this inscription

'The marks the spot reached by the 50th Regt N.C. Volunteers about noon on Sept 20, 1863 .... "

Obviously the Daughters of The Confederacy were proud of their fathers and their deeds a Chickamauga. The sad part is that this monument has really been ravaged by time in the elements and much of the inscription can't be reliably read by visitors. I attempted to find the text on a website, but could find nothing.

"This marker is erected
In loving memory of the men of Buncombe County who volunteered and served in the War with Spain, the insurrection in the Phillipines and the China Relief expedition, 1898-1902

This stone is erected by the Ladies Auxilliary of Thomas W Patton Camp No. 5
United Spanish War Veterans
Unveiled November 12, 1939"

"To honor the Revolutionary Soldiers buried in Buncombe County, N.C.

Erected by the Edward Buncombe Chapter
Daughters of The American Revolution
Asheville, 1937"

The bronze plaque mounted for the Spanish American War and American Revolution are in need of maintenance, but can be discerned easily.
