Used mostly to train northern conscripts for war, Camp Greene was dismantled quickly after the Armistice Camp Greene DAR Memorial -
US-74 at Monument Dr
Charlotte, Mecklenburg County
"Erected by Mecklenburg Chapter Daughters of The American Revolution in commemoration of CAMP GREENE and in honor of the MEN who were trained here for service in WORLD WAR"
In 1917 the 600 surrounding acres was barren landscape, undeveloped with the exception of a few roads passing by. Now, only 90 years later, is has seen a city grow far beyond the 35,000 citizens that hosted the 60,00 American soldiers of Camp Greene. The camp was built in just 90 days and its' operations ceased within 40 days after the Armistice was signed on November 11th.
Most of the soldiers trained here were from Massachusetts and other parts of New England. The monument lists the various companies and regiments formed here and notes the Commanding Officers of each. Camp Greene holds the distinction of training three divisions here, more than any other training camp of the World War.
