Monument honors men from Civil War to present
Cherokee Veterans Park
Tribal Administration Offices, US-441
Cherokee, Swain County

"In honor of White County veterans who paid the supreme sacrifice in defense of the United States of America

Donated by Disabled American Veterans
White County Chapter 19
and Ladies Auxilliary"

"This park is dedicated to all members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians who served honorably in the armed forces of this great nation, and especially to those who died in the effort and to Charles George, the only member of the Easter Band to be awared the Congressional Medal of Honor."

Technically this monument sits on foreign soil. The Cherokee Nation has had men serving in United States uniforms as long as the nation has existed. These tablets honor those from the Civil War forward. Many of the names shown are inscribed with the native translation. Charles George was an Army PFC in Korea. On November 30, 1952, 1952 he pushed two men out of harms way and threw himself on an enemy grenade to save them.

The memorial also carries native art below the service seals. It's unusual, but very interesting.
