Former City Square?
Confederate Soldiers Memorial
Scotland County Courthouse Square
Laurinburg, Scotland County

"To The Confederate Soldiers Of Scotland County, The Record Of Whose Sublime Self-Sacrifice And Undying Devotion To Duty In The Service Of Their Country Is The Fond Heritage Of A Loyal Posterity"

A casual observer might look at the placement of this monument and surmise the ground around it was likely a much larger town square during the last century. Their is a feature on this monument that I've not seen before or, more likely, have not really noticed on others. There is a broken flag standard on bas relief on the front side, over the main inscrption. It appears to hold the flag of the United States of America. If so, the symbolism of this presentation says much more than the inscriptions ever could.

"We care not whence they came, Dear, in their lifeless clay, whether unknown or known to fame, their cause and country still the same, they died and wore the gray."

Like many cenotaphs of this era, the sculpture details are sometimes difficult to discern.

First and Last - A sentiment, and a memory, of thousands of soliders on both sides of the conflict.
