Hometown remembers a Marine & his comrades Lebanon Marine Dead Memorial
Old Depot Site
Mooresville, Iredell County
In memorial to our Marines and Sailors
of the multi-national peace keeping force
Lebanon 1983-1984"
Marines, and those that serve with Marines, have a fierce pride in their devotion to duty. This memorial honors 21 North Carolinians, one with roots in Mooresville. They were among 241 service personnel killed in Lebanon during 1983 and 1984. One incident stands out from the rest, October 23, 1983, when Islamic terrorists bombed a barracks building in Beruit.
For most of us this was the first indication of the tactics that would be used against American, and other Western interests, around the world in the next three decades. One of the young Marines killed on that date was 19 year old Mooresville native Tim McNeely. His loss is still a source of pain and pride for his family, even after more than 20 years. While they mourn his absence they also reach out to others who, as we continue to place our service personnel in harms way, join that exclusive club known as "surviving family members."
