A very small memorial in a very small town All Veterans Memorial
West Allenton St
Mt Gilead, Montgomery County
the Mt Gilead area who served our country
in times of peace and war
an to those who paid the supreme sacrifice
so that we may enjoy freedom
their spirit, love, and devotion to country
will be forever remembered"
It's very easy to believe that not much has changed in this rural North Carolina town from the times that Washington Senators pitcher Ray Scarborough walked the streets as a boy in the 1930's. The memorial is tucked into a small area next to the local police station. It consists of a flagpole mounted to a granite base dedicated to local veterans.
If you have the time to stop, walk across the street from this memorial and spend a few moments in the Mt Gilead Museum. It is located in a historic house of 1881 and the many rooms are devoted to the history of the area. One of those rooms has a large display of memoribilia from local veterans and some of it is significant. I won't let the secret out, but you will enjoy the visit. The one thing I will share, is this bronze plaque found here on this page... it is a World War I honor roll commissioned and mounted in a local church that is now gone.
