First raising of the U.S. flag over Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima
February 19 to March 26, 1945
The battle of Iwo Jima was fought by the United States and Japan in February and March 1945, during the Pacific Campaign of World War II. The U.S. invasion, known as Operation Detachment, was aimed at capturing the airfields of Iwo Jima.
This memorial is dedicated to all the US Armed Forces that served during this conflict.
New Straitsville is a
SMALL town. That it has the desire to support such a large memorial presentation is testimony to the respect offered by the residents to those that have served. Well done, New Straitsville, and thank you.
Update: January 2010. I have received word from Mr. Joseph Maroon that a transcription error existed on this page. The dates I had were inaccurate. Sure enough, it was evident that I had made a mistake when creating the page and I thank Joe for his heads up.
