Oconee County Honor Rolls
County Courthouse, GA-28
Walhalla, Oconee County

"For those who went and are never to return,
America's heart will always burn"

This memorial is actually done in two sections; one is the honor roll listing and the second is a long bring wall with many bronze plaques mounted. The plaques and adjacent monument are dedicated to all those that served. The honor roll listing also reminders county residents of Medal of Honor winner S/Sgt Lewis G. Watkins, USMC.

Watkins was a native of Seneca and when he entered the Korean conflict in September of 1950 he was employed by the Greenville Police Department. He gave his life for his comrades. During a fire fight involving automatic weapons the enemy forces tossed a grenade into the area that Watkins and his squad occupied. Watkins shoved aside his buddies, picked up the grenade and attempted to throw it away from them. He didn't have enough time and lost his life to the blast.
