"In Eternal Remembrance

Of the soldiers tried and true, who bore the flag of a nation's trust and fell in a cause, though lost, still just and died for me and you."

"Erected by
Winnie Davis Chapter U.D.C.
1906"

"Those for whom they died have erected this monument to recall to their children and their fellow countrymen how worthily they lived how nobly they died and in what tender remembrance their memory survives"

This visit surprised us, we did not expect to find the gravesite of a 7th Cavalry officer from the battle at Wounded Knees, South Dakota. The grave of Capt. George Wallace, USA, is here - an ornate tomb to honor a man that died in a climate not his own. December in South Dakota is vastly different from that enjoyed by his family in his native South Carolina. That's not uncommon for many that die in service, they are in unfamiliar surroundings doing a job that is often unpopular.
