Mable obelisk topped by eagle Sevier County Honor Roll
Courthouse, off US-441
Sevierville, Sevier County
"In recognition of the Merchant Marines and other groups who are combatant
services in war"
Past, Present, Future
Nov 11, 1995"
This presentation is a good example of how to correct an error of omission. The original sculpture, a five sided obelisk, only shows the services seals of the US Army, US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Coast Guard, and US Air Force. The Merchant Marines, an often misunderstood force of the United States, was neglected. At some point in time a granite stone recognizing the Merchant Marines was dedicated and placed near the obelisk.
Nearly every monument in the USA has some flaw, and many times it's the ignorance of the designers that cause a serious omission. That can be forgiven, but what is beyond comprehension are those displays that never make the attempt to correct the error. Bravo Zulu Sevier County!
